New cemetery for Christians opened

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday declared open a newly-constructed cemetery for Christians at Fatehpur Beri Asola village in the Mehrauli area of South Delhi.

Spread over 4,500 square metres and equipped with a 122 square metres hall as well, the cemetery has been developed by the Rural Development Board of Delhi at a cost of Rs.31 lakhs.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit observed that the Delhi Government had been working on the development of cremation grounds and graveyards.

She also announced that a “Christian Chaupal” would be constructed at Asola and another cemetery would be developed in Ayanagar.

The Member of Parliament from Outer Delhi, Sajjan Kumar, and Mehrauli MLA Balram Tanwar, who had contributed Rs.3 lakh for the cemetery from his MLA Local Area Development Fund, were among those present on the occasion.
