HASSAN: Hassan District Janata Dal (Secular) president H.K. Javare Gowda has called for a Hassan bandh on Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in protest against the Government’s failure to supply fertilizers to farmers. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Gowda said Hassan and Kolar districts were known for potato cultivation. The requirement of fertilizers for potato cultivation in Hassan district alone was 6,000 tonnes, while the supply so far was only 2,000 tonnes. He criticised the Agriculture Department for supplying only two bags of fertilizer each to farmers. “This is inadequate. A farmer who sows 50 bags of seed potato gets one or two bags of fertilizer, while a small farmer who sows 10 bags of seed potato also gets a similar amount. The present shortage is mainly owing to neglect by the government,” he alleged. Hassan District Central Cooperative Bank president Patel Shivaram was present.
