Civic body unprepared to meet the situation Unplanned growth disrupts water flow in drains BERHAMPUR: The pre-monsoon showers have revealed how unprepared is the city sewerage system to face heavy rainfall. Most of the drains remain clogged by polythene waste though the monsoon rains are to start in another week. The pre-monsoon showers for a few hours have led to heavy water-logging in some areas of the city during the past few days. The city is yet to have a planned sewerage system. Old canalsThe two major canals on the two sides of the city – Bahana Nala and Sapua Nala – are being renovated so that they could carry more water from the city limits. Defunct systemBut the decades old sewerage system is almost in a defunct state. Unplanned growth of concrete jungle has disrupted the flow of water through these drains at many places. The old drains do not have the proper slope to carry the accumulated water. Though the national highway is to have proper drains on both sides, the stretch of NH 217 that passes through the city is yet to have such a facility at major portions. Due to lack of drains, water logging occurs on the highway and its adjoining areas, which would continue for days together. MaintenanceMost inhabitants of the city allege that the drains are not cleaned regularly and heavy rains are their major cleaners. After the recent rains, most of the drains got choked. As a result, drain water flows onto the road at many areas.
