PUDUCHERRY: Barring a few incidents of stone pelting, the 12-hour general strike called by the Left parties on Saturday to protest against the hike in fuel price passed off peacefully.

Windshields of three buses, one belonging to the Pondichery Road Transport Corporation bus and two to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), were damaged in different incidents of stone throwing. Four persons were arrested for damaging the windscreen of two TNSTC buses at Villianur and Lawspet, the police said.

Thin attendance was reported at government offices and banks. Most of the buses operated by the private operators and the government were off the roads. Shops and business establishments downed shutters in many parts of the town and on the outskirts. Around 300 activists of the Left parties, including the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and the All India Forward Bloc, attempted to stage road roko at different places and courted arrest.

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the CPI N. Kalainathan, Tamil Nadu State Committee member of the CPI (M) T. Murugan and leader of the All India Trade Union Congress V.S. Abishekam were among the arrested.

The activists staged protests at Kamaraj Salai, Anna Salai, Ariankuppam, Madagadipet, Lawspet, new bus stand and a venue opposite Anglo French Textile Mills, the police said.
