NEW DELHI: Members of the Gujjar community in Delhi organised a large panchayat under the leadership of Mehrauli MLA Balram Tanwar on Saturday to protest against “atrocities” of the Rajasthan Government on the agitating members of the community in that State. The panchayat deplored the police firing and government action against the Gurjjars in Rajasthan who have been protesting for Scheduled Tribe status in the State. It also observed a two-minute silence in the memory of those killed in the violence in Rajasthan. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also participated in the meeting. She expressed deep grief at the deaths of the citizens and conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families. She said every community has a right to raise demand for its development, welfare and uplift. “They have every right to demand opportunities of education and employment-oriented training. It is not proper to deny the right of expression. Justified and rightful demands need to be considered with all seriousness,” the Chief Minister added.
