Withdraw fuel price hike: Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday demanded that the Centre withdraw the hike in prices of petroleum products in public interest. In the interim the Tamil Nadu government should stop distributing television sets and cooking gas stoves and absorb the increase in fuel price.

In a statement here, she said the poor were hit hard because of the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Economists had said that the inflation rate was likely to go up to 12 per cent. When prices of commodities had skyrocketed, the latest hike caused further hardship to people. She said an “extraordinary situation” prevailed in the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
