More amenities for Sabarimala pilgrims

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) would take up a number of projects to provide better amenities for Sabarimala pilgrims before the next festival season. The projects are being taken up according to the Sabarimala master plan and the Pampa Action Plan.

A release issued by the TDB here on Saturday said the Chandranandan road would be widened by 7 metres to avoid the rush of pilgrims, with the consent of the High Court.

The estimated cost of the scheme is Rs.4.79 crore. Design for constructing a complex to house the ‘appam’ and ‘aravana’ plants has been prepared.

Two water tanks with a capacity 20 lakh litres each would be constructed at Pandithavalam. Proposals to set up a 3 MLD sewage treatment plant and an incinerator at Sabarimala have been placed before the Pollution Control Board.

A meeting chaired by the Devaswom ombudsman has decided to draw the outline for the queue complex.

A scheme for constructing resting places on the traditional route from Sabarimala to Pampa has been placed before the High Court for approval. The court has cleared the proposal for constructing a urinal block on Swamy Ayyappan Road.

The construction of toilet blocks on the Swamy Ayyappan Road and Neelimala has been held up due to objection raised by the Forest Department. Steps have been taken to clear the impediments.
