HYDERABAD: The State unit of All-India Democratic Women’s Association will stage demonstrations and picket Mandal Revenue Offices across the State on June 17, protesting against the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. At a press conference here on Saturday, newly-elected president T. Jyoti and secretary K. Swaroopa Rani said the resolution was passed at AIDWA’s recent State-level convention held at Kurnool on June 2, 3 and 4. Another important resolution was to seek a ban on ‘futures trading’. The convention expressed concern at the rising prices, particularly the latest hike in prices of petroleum products. Every such hike had a cascading effect on the prices of every product in any economy. The burden of price hikes in general was felt more on women who were the ‘real managers’. Ms. Rani said the convention underscored the need to strengthen the public distribution system and place at least 15 items of daily consumption in households such as rice, dal, oil, kerosene, soaps and detergents in every fair price shop. She said the National Health Survey found that 74 per cent of women and 54 per cent of children below six years suffered from malnutrition.
