Cane growers to get Rs. 160 more a tonne

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: As many as 49 factories would be asked to pay Rs. 160 more a tonne to cane growers as directed by Governor Rameshwar Thakur three months ago, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa told a delegation of the State Sugarcane Growers Association here on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said that the factories had been given benefits.

Farmers were in distress for one reason or the other, and asked factory owners to clear their dues, he said.

Later, State Sugarcane Growers Association president Kuruboor Shantakumar told presspersons that purchase tax had been reduced to Rs. 70 a tonne; crushing charge was Rs. 100; ban on selling molasses had been lifted; and transportation subsidy of Rs. 2 a tonne for a km had been given.

They owed arrears of Rs. 460 crore to the farmers for 2007-08, Mr. Shantakumar said.
