Thiruvananthapuram
Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Education and Cultural Affairs M.A. Baby said here on Saturday that the Gurugopinath Nadanagramam at Vattiyoorkavu would be developed as a national centre for performing arts. Speaking after inaugurating various development projects taken up as part of the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gopinath, he said the government would extend support for the effort to elevate the Nadanagramam campus to the status of a national centre like the Santhinikethan. “The Guru combined the attributes of an artiste, teacher and creator in himself. Not all artistes are good teachers. Likewise, not all teachers are gifted with the talent to conquer the hearts of art lovers. Guru Gopinath’s personality was a unique combination of both. The art form of Kerala Nadanam developed by him demonstrates his unique approach to art,” he said Vice-chairman of Nadanagramam K.C.Vikraman presided over the function. Councillor S. Binu, Vattiyoorkavu gram panchayat president S. Pazhaniya Pillai and executive director of the Centre of Science and Technology for Rural Development (Costford) P.B. Sajan were present. The first phase of the development project at the Nadanagramam involves the construction of an open air theatre named ‘Chilamboli’ at a cost of Rs.20 lakh. The existing building on the campus will be developed as a memorial to Guru Gopinath. A new study and research centre and a library will also be constructed.
