BU to act tough against colleges charging high fees

Staff Reporter

There have been complaints of excess fees being collected

Bangalore: In an attempt to protect students’ interests, Bangalore University has decided to take action against colleges that have been collecting more than the prescribed fees.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath said the university had received complaints about colleges charging high fees. “ The university has clearly specified the fees to be collected for various courses. The colleges cannot charge more than that,” he said.

Prof. Ranganath invited students and parents to submit their written complaints along with proof to the university, so that action could be initiated against colleges.

“There are some colleges which do not even give receipt for the fees collected. In such cases, the university cannot take any action,” he said. He also said that payment of donation should not be made compulsory. “Donation collected in the name of infrastructure development and others cannot be made compulsory. We have taken serious note of this issue,” he said.

Prof. Ranganath said the Syndicate deliberated on the issue and decided to either disaffiliate the erring college or impose a heavy fine for collecting excess fees.

The Syndicate also discussed the issue of norms being flouted by colleges with regard to MBA admissions. The committee that had been formed to look into the issue had submitted its report, based on which show-cause notices had been issued. “Of these, six colleges replied to the show-cause notices,” said Sanjay Vir Singh, Registrar.

He said that the committee found that the documents submitted by 10 students from two colleges were not in order.
