Title deed of CPI land cancelled

Deed cancelled by tahsildar on Collector’s order

Party does not need title deed, says CPI leaders

Idukki: The Revenue Department on Saturday cancelled the title deed of the land on which the district office of the CPI is situated in Munnar, near here.

Reacting to the development, CPI leaders maintained that there was no need to create a controversy out of the issue. The party did not require a title deed since the land was purchased by it as back as in 1959, they said.

The order for cancellation of the title deed was issued by the tahsildar of Devikolam taluk based on a direction from the District Collector, official sources here said. According to CPI sources, the party had originally bought seven cents of land in Munnar in 1959 and the deal then included the right over the adjoining four cents, known in records as ‘virivu land.’

The decision was not going to have any implication on the party’s property as it had every right over the land since it was purchased, CPI State assistant secretary K.E. Ismail, MP, said.

The issue became a source of controversy when a portion of the CPI office in Munnar was pulled down as part of the anti-encroachment drive launched by the CPI(M)-led LDF government a year ago.

There had been allegations that part of the building stood on encroached land without proper documents.

The party leaders, however, stoutly deny the allegation. — PTI
