Farmers told not to panic in the wake of shortage

Union Fertilizer Secretary meets Yeddyurappa

Chief Minister ready to take team to Prime Minister

BANGALORE: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday promised farmers that arrangements had been made to supply fertilizers to them without any delay.

Addressing presspersons here after meeting a delegation of the State Sugarcane Growers’ Association led by its president Kuruboor Shantakumar, the Chief Minister told farmers not to panic in the wake of the shortage of fertilizers. He expressed confidence that the Centre would make arrangements to release fertilizers to the State.

He said that the Centre owed Rs. 10,000 crore to fertilizer companies, including Rs. 400 crore to Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers towards subsidy.

In the evening, Union Fertilizer Secretary J.S. Sharma met Mr. Yeddyurappa and explained the steps taken to augment supply of fertilizers in the coming months. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that he would take an all-party delegation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard, if needed. He said because of the early onset of monsoon, farmers had begun sowing and they needed seeds and fertilizers.

On the request of Mr. Singh not to levy sales tax on petrol and diesel, he said that with its limited resources, it was difficult for the State Government to give more relief. However, the Government was discussing with the officers concerned on reducing the burden on the people.

The issue would be raised at the meeting of the Empowered Committee in New Delhi on June 16. It would also be discussed at the next State Cabinet meeting, he added. Mr. Sharma, who monitored the arrangements made by the Department of Agriculture to distribute fertilizers, said that there was no problem in the availability of urea and MoP for June.
