Healthy initiative: The Minister for Backward Classes, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, inaugurating the cardiac camp at Sivakasi on Saturday. SIVAKASI: A screening camp for children with heart ailments, organised as part of the Chief Minister’s ‘Ilam Sirar Irudaya Padukappu Thittam,’ was inaugurated by the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, at Sri Kaliswari College here on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ramachandran said that the State Government had made arrangements for performing heart surgeries for identified children at Government Rajaji Hospital, Vadamalayan Hospital, Apollo Speciality Hospitals and Meenakshi Mission Hospital in Madurai. Doctors and teachersHe said that doctors, who cured the children of their ailments, were as venerable as teachers. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that medical check up was being conducted on 99 children by specialists at the camp. They were among 2.32 lakh children screened in the district for heart ailments. The State Government, he said, had allocated Rs.4.6 lakh in the first phase of the implementation of the scheme. A further allotment of Rs.20 lakh would be made soon. The Minister also distributed assistance worth Rs.7.33 lakh under various schemes to 210 beneficiaries on the occasion. Balasubramanian, Deputy Director, Health Services, welcomed the gathering and Vadivelan, Deputy Director, proposed a vote of thanks.
