New Delhi: Punjab seamer Manpreet Gony was on Saturday included in the Indian cricket squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh after paceman S. Sreesanth was ruled out due to a side strain sustained during the DLF-IPL. “Due to the non-availability of Sreesanth, it was decided by the Selection Committee to send Manpreet Gony for the Bangladesh tri-series,” Niranjan Shah, Secretary, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said in a media release. “Sreesanth was yesterday assessed by Dr. Kinja at Bangalore. He has got a left-sided external oblique strain. “He would require about two weeks for recovering from the current situation and getting back to his normal bowling routine. However, he will be available for the Asia Cup in Pakistan,” the release added. Gony thus became the third player to have been rewarded for his good performance in the recently-concluded IPL. Gony, who has played just five-first class matches, claimed 17 wickets in 16 matches for Chennai Super Kings at an average of 26.05.Baroda’s Yusuf Pathan and Hyderabad’s Pragyan Ojha were earlier given ODI calls for the tri-series. — PTI Principal Correspondent adds from Bangalore: Fitness test on Monday
Meanwhile, Sreesanth will report to the National Cricket Academy for his fitness assessment on Monday. According to the NCA authorities, Sreesanth will be tested by the academy’s fitness specialists Paul Chapman and Paul Close with director Dav Whatmore keeping a close watch on Monday.
