LONDON: New Approach, trained in Ireland by Jim Bolger and ridden by Kevin Manning, galloped to an exciting win in the Epsom Derby on Saturday at odds of 5-1. The top two-year-old of last year — who had been placed in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas — hit the front about two furlongs from the finish and strode to an impressive victory to give owner Princess Haya of Jordan — who had received the horse as a present from husband and ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum — a dream win. The second spot in the field of 16 went to Tartan Bearer (6-1), the mount of Ryan Moore, with the 7-2 favourite Casual Conquest, partnered by Pat Smullen, in third. It was the first victory in the classic race for both Bolger and Manning. The winning distances were half-a-length and four-and-half lengths. — Agencies
