dated June 9, 1958: Speedy news transmission

The transmission and reproduction of newspaper text at astronomical speed was envisaged in a report received in Tokyo on June 7 at the 11th Congress of the International Publishers’ Federation. The report recommended the establishment of an International Technical Institute to study the new developments in electronics and their application to newspaper production. The American electronic system “chacattons” made it possible to transmit 10,000 letters per second to newspapers for reproduction. The “erographic” method allowed transmission direct to the printing plant of the future which would consist of a row of television sets with the paper running in front of each to produce 90,000 copies an hour.
