KOCHI: Kochi will host the National Policy Conference on Voluntary Sector to be organised jointly by the Planning Commission, New Delhi, Institute of Small Enterprises and Development (ISED) and International Network on SMEs in Local Economic Development-India The three-day conference, starting June 18, is meant to provide a platform for critical evaluation and deliberations on the National Policy on the Voluntary Sector (NPVS) announced by the Panning Commission. Announced in July 2007, this policy aims at improving the engagement between the government and the voluntary sector in recognition of the vital role of the latter in the development process. According to some reports, with 12 lakh operational voluntary organisations, a workforce of approximately two crores and their local stakeholders, the policy has the potential to affect several crores of people in the country, said a communication from ISED here. The NPVS, which acknowledges the existence and role of the voluntary sector, has been hailed by some as a “landmark policy,” said the communication. The policy had also been criticised as too rigid in its approach, it said. Syeda Hameed, member of the Planning Commission, will inaugurate the conference, which seeks to ensure the participation of several stakeholders, including, Ministries and Departments of Union and State governments, corporates, the United Nations, donors, academics and the voluntary sector itself. The conference has a special relevance against the new initiative of the United Nations for measuring the contributions by the voluntary sector in the country’s Gross Domestic Product. More details on the conference are carried by the institute’s web site www.isedonline.org.
