Implement decisions, dock, port workers urge Union Minister

Staff Reporter

Federation takes up issue with Baalu

Meeting sought with Shipping Ministry to sort out issues

Call to implement demands to avert labour unrest

KOCHI: The All India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation has written to T.R. Baalu, Union Minister for Shipping, regarding what the federation described as “mounting unrest amongst the port and dock workers” on the failure of the Ministry to implement the understanding reached on several issues.

The letter said that in May this year, representatives of the five recognised federations of port and dock workers sent a letter to the Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, drawing his attention to the “undue delay” in implementing the understanding arrived at among the Indian Ports Association (IPA) and the Dock Labour Boards and the five recognised federations of port and dock workers on various issues.

The trade unions had also requested A.P.V. N. Sarma, Secretary (Shipping), for an immediate meeting for a “just and proper decision” on implementing the decisions without delay and to avert labour unrest. The issues on which understanding had been reached included payment of enhanced amount of productivity-linked reward (PLR); payment of interim relief as agreed between the five federations and the Indian Ports Association; merger of DA in basic pay with effect from January 1, 2005; discussion and decision on filling vacancies including in promotion posts; implementation of the report of the committee constituted by the Ministry on cadre restructuring and the Indian Ports Association’s recommendation on liberalised medical benefits to retired employees at all the major ports.

The federation, in its letter, sought an early meeting with the Shipping Ministry to sort out the issues at the earliest to avoid any further delay.
