Police Department to be modernised Stress on welfare of police personnel MANGALORE: The Union Government must help State governments contain terrorism and particularly in Karnataka, Home Minister V.S. Acharya has said. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in the State is committed to containing terrorist and naxal activities, the task will be easier if the Centre extends logistical help including intelligence, he said. In an informal chat with The Hindu on Sunday, Dr. Acharya said his main priority as Home Minister was to establish peace, and maintain law and order in the State. He said, “A cordial atmosphere in the State is essential if the Government wants to implement its development programmes. It is the priority of the BJP government to implement all its development programmes in right earnestness.” Stating that good law and order situation would attract investors to the region, Dr. Acharya thanked Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa for giving him this responsibility. He said that he believed in being straight-forward and honest in his approach and perhaps this was the reason why he was given the portfolio. Regarding his immediate priorities, Dr. Acharya said he would strive to modernise the Police Department and implement various welfare measures planned for the police personnel. He added that steps would be taken to assure people that the department would protect their lives and property.
