development: Work on four-laning of Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway in progress near Senthanneerpuram in Tiruchi. KARUR: Inordinate delay in land acquisition for National Highway expansion projects has hit development works. Projects that suffer include Karur-Namakkal and Karur-Dindigul (both on NH 7) and Karur-Tiruchi (on NH 67) works. For the NH 7 projects for developing the Namakkal-Karur-Dindigul stretch into four-lane road, notification under the National Highways Land Acquisition Act 1956 was issued around two to three years ago. Although the whole process of land acquisition and disbursal of compensation and settling the issue could have taken a maximum of one year, the authorities are still grappling with the issue. Public whose land and property were acquired feel that a little more concerted effort by the authorities could have helped them get the compensation expeditiously. In Karur district, 111 hectare on the NH 7 and 250 hectare on the NH 67 sections need to be acquired of which only 50 per cent on the NH 7 section and a negligible extant alongside NH 67 has been acquired. In Tiruchi district, around 250 hectare for NH 67 expansion needs to be acquired .
