Decision on Asif’s case today

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: The fate of Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif, who was found in possession of a banned substance, now rests with the Dubai Attorney-General. He is expected to take a decision on the case on Monday.

Mr. Asif was produced before the chief prosecutor, who recorded his statement on Friday. On Sunday, the official compiled his recommendations and forwarded them to the Attorney-General.

“The Attorney-General has the final authority and he will take a decision tomorrow [Monday],” Nadeem Akram, an official from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told The Hindu. Mr. Akram said he was “hopeful” that Mr. Asif would be released soon.

The Attorney-General is empowered to sign administrative deportation orders, which could prevent the case from being referred to the Dubai courts.

Mr. Akram said “he was not aware” whether the cricketer had been charge-sheeted.
