Andhra Pradesh
It was a matter of shame that anti-social elements had attacked Andhra Jyothi newspaper in broad daylight, an assault on the democratic foundations of the country, which has been professing non-violence since ages. We saw this happen in Tamil Nadu when the office of ‘Dinakaran’ was attacked by ruling party hooligans. What was more appalling was another attack on the same newspaper office on the following day. The Government is turning a blind eye when self-styled leaders openly threaten with more attacks on the press. It is high time that we raised our voice against this kind of mindless violence against freedom of expression. G.V.R.M Gopal Visakhapatnam Improve servicesThe call centres of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation and the Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited had toll free numbers, but not any more. Also, it appears that the supervisors were not being assertive in getting the complaints/grievances settled expeditiously. A couple of call centre employees had expressed their ‘helplessness’, when asked as to why there was an inordinate delay in rectification of complaints and buck was passed to the outdoor staff and many excuses followed. As the Government is eager to improve the quality of services, especially with the elections just round the corner more ‘teeth’ should be given to the supervisors manning the call centres in both the vital service sectors. Gopal Tallamraju Visakhapatnam Repair UGD systemThe underground drainage system in Simhadripuram of HB Colony overflows at of the some points and floods the roads, which were dug up and left partially covered. The stench is unbearable and no measures were taken by the GVMC, causing severe inconvenience to the residents. The narrow roads were also encroached by kiosk owners who add to problem. The ground water was already contaminated and was unfit for any kind of use. I appeal to the GVMC to take immediate action. M. Vivek Visakhapatnam Anomalies in VI pay commissionA hue and cry is raised by the personnel of Armed forces and IPS about the inadequacies and anomalies in the pay scales recommended by the VI Central Pay Commission and they want parity with IAS officers, i.e., officers in the grade of deputy secretary, secretary, etc. But the fate of lakhs of Central employees in grade C and D is pitiable and nobody is bothered about the discrepancies in their pay scales. At least 85 per cent of the Central employees including pensioners are from categories C and D, who are suffering silently. And the worst among the pensioners are those in the age group of 75 to 85 years. I request the Central Government to bring some sort of parity in wages of working employees and extend benefits to pensioners. M. Jagannadha Rao Vizianagaram
