This Day That Age
Britain’s new plan for Cyprus, which will be announced within a week, is expected, in political circles in London, to propose a large measure of internal self-government in which the rival Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities would co-operate. Details of the new policy, which has been formulated after diplomatic talks in Ankara, Athens and London, are being kept secret but unofficial indications are that it will avoid any immediate action on Greek-Cypriots’ demands for the island colony’s union with Greece or the minority Turkish-Cypriot demands for partition. Its aim would be to bring about a truce and peaceful conditions in which a final solution on the island’s future could be worked out.
