PUDUCHERRY: People’s Pulse, a non-governmental organisation, on Monday urged the police to take steps to regulate the pavement vendors in such a way that pedestrian passage was not obstructed in the town. A delegation led by S.Hemachandran called on Director-General of Police A.S.Khan and submitted the outfit’s suggestions to ensure hassle-free traffic in the town. According to a release issued by People’s Pulse, among the suggestions presented by the organisation was the one related to removal of all encroachments and projections to ensure free passage of pedestrians. The NGO had also asked the authorities to provide adequate parking area and introduction of paid parking system. It had also pleaded for strict enforcement of traffic regulations and introduction of spot-fine system. “The recommendations of the Traffic Advisory Committee cannot curtail or usurp the statutory powers for regulation of traffic conferred on different levels of police and transport authorities,” the outfit pointed out. It urged the government to take steps to widely use the information technology for regulation of traffic. It had suggested that dedicated toll free landline and mobile numbers of traffic officers should be made available to the public to have immediate access to them, besides efficiently utilising the website of Puducherry police to interact with the people. All telephone and mobile numbers and website address should be displayed prominently in all police vehicles, it said.
