Now a call centre for reproductive health

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The government has launched a call centre — first of its kind in the country — where people can anonymously put queries on reproductive health, sexual diseases and abortion to get answers from trained executives and doctors.

It will provide proper health information, particularly to women, who have hardly any access to it in vast stretches of north and central India.

The call centre (011-66665555) will be functional between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The service is now available from Monday to Saturday in Hindi and English. Though the helpline is not toll free, the Centre plans to make it so in future.

Launched by Union Health and Family Welfare Secretary Naresh Dayal, the call centre would be maintained by the the Delhi-based BPO company, vCustomer.

Talking to journalists at the launch, Shailaja Chandra, executive director, Jansankhya Sthirata Kosh (National Population Stabilisation Fund), said that in large parts of north and central India where fertility rate was very high, there was no easy access to sexual information for socio-cultural reasons.
