15 injured in violence at Orissa plant site
Bhubaneswar: At least 15 people, including five security personnel, were injured when police used batons and fired teargas shells to disperse villagers who tried to damage construction work inside a private steel company in Orissa’s Dhenkanal district on Tuesday.
People from Sarpa and Raghunathpur villages, who were demanding settlement of a compensation package, forcibly entered the premises of Bhusan Steel and Strip at Meramunduli and began damaging construction work there.
DIG (north-central range) Arun Kumar Sarangi told PTI that five teargas shells were fired at the mob inside the plant premises. He said that police did not fire in the air.
The villagers have been protesting the construction of Bhusan’s 3 MTPA capacity steel plant, demanding settlement of a compensation package for those affected by the project.
They said the company did not comply with the promises made to the people. They demanded regular employment and a high rate of compensation. — PTI
