TIRUNELVELI: Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta has said that the draft photo electoral rolls would be released on July 21 and the final rolls ready by first week of September.

He was speaking to reporters here on Tuesday after holding a review meeting with the District Election Officers (District Collectors), Electoral Registration Officers and Special Tahsildar (Elections) of Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Virudhunagar districts on the methodology to be adopted during cent per cent field verification for the photo electoral rolls, reorganisation of polling stations etc.

Mr. Gupta, who gave a detailed power-point presentation on the steps to be followed during field verification, said that training had been given to the participants of the meeting on identifying surplus and missing voters.

Since boundaries of the constituencies had changed in the wake of delimitation exercise, the electoral rolls had to be prepared scrupulously without missing any eligible voter or adding any surplus voter in the list.

Once the work was completed, the draft roll would be ready by July 21 and the final list released in September first week.

Satisfied

Expressing satisfaction over the completion of work on the photo electoral rolls in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and Virudhunagar districts, Mr. Gupta said all the four districts had finished more than 99 per cent of the exercise even as Kancheepuram and Chennai districts were lagging behind.

He said it was too early to predict whether the number of polling stations in each constituency would go up or drop as preparation of draft photo electoral rolls for the delimited segments was still going on.

The Electors’ Photo Identity Card centres in the taluks would become cent per cent operational soon to capture the images of voters as one of the vital equipment required for this exercise was yet to arrive.

District Collectors G. Prakash (Tirunelveli), R. Palaniyandi (Tuticorin), B. Jothi Nirmala (Kanyakumari) and V. Chandrasekaran (Virudhunagar), Joint Chief Electoral Officer S. Bragada, and Joint Chief Electoral Officer (Computerisation), Jayashree Muralidharan, attended the meeting.
