Minister, corporators at loggerheads
Special Correspondent
KURNOOL: The Christian cemetery issue triggered differences between Minister for Marketing M. Mareppa and the corporators of his own party in the town. Deputy Mayor Abdul Razak and others faulted the Minister who inaugurated the cemetery without involving the Mayor, Commissioner and the corporators.
The Minister formally declared open the cemetery on Monday night near Mamidalapadu after the government issued orders earmarking two acres of land for the cemetery.
The corporators have argued that the council wanted to debate on the issue before declaring it open since the Municipal Corporation owned the piece of land.
In fact, the corporation identified the land way back in 1990 for the cemetery when the Congress was in power. The deputy Mayor and corporators alleged that the Minister was creating groups within the Congress in the town and was bypassing the corporation.
“We put up with the behaviour of the Minister in matters that did not concern the corporation. But now, the Minister’s act amounted to interference in the functioning of the corporation,” they said. They said the matter would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister.
