Rs. 27.7-crore project to stock fish

Special Correspondent

41.38 crore fingerlings to be dropped in 27 reservoirs and 57,578 tanks

this year

HYDERABAD: The government has finalised a Rs. 27.7-crore ambitious plan to grow fish on a large scale in reservoirs and tanks in the State and thus help fishermen.

As part of the project, 41.38 crore fingerlings will be left in 27 identified reservoirs and 57,578 tanks this year.

Funds to implement the project will be obtained from various sources like National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, Word Bank and the State Plan.

Production of fish worth Rs. 724.15 crore is expected from the project in the first year itself.

S. Ayyappan, Chief Executive Officer, NFDB, presented cheque for Rs. 16.25 crore sanctioned by his organisation to Aravind Kumar, Commissioner, Fisheries, in the presence of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy and Fisheries Minister M. Buddha Prasad here on Tuesday.

Training for fishermen

The NFDB also has sanctioned Rs. 2.45 crore to train 20,000 fishermen in modern fishing techniques.

These two amounts meet 58 per cent of the seed stocking project. Fish-seed stocking assumes importance, as inland fresh water fish production of the State, now put at 6.85 lakh tonnes annually, requires huge quantity of seed.

Middlemen

The government has taken up growing of fish seed by way of stocking after finding that fisherman are not able to handle this job due to their dependence on middlemen for funds and lack of working capital.

The plan provides for sale of fish seed to fishermen cooperative societies at 50 per cent subsidy.
