Diesel engine catches fire
Staff Reporter
TIRUCHI: A light diesel engine caught fire between Ariyalur and Sillakudi on the Tiruchi-Villupuram broad gauge section on Wednesday evening. No major damage had been reported, railway officials here told The Hindu.
The locomotive was on its way to Tiruchi when its filter caught fire, prompting the loco pilot to immediately shut down the engine and bring it to a halt. The fire was put out using fire extinguishers within an hour. Consequent to the incident, the Villupuram-Madurai passenger was halted at Ottakoil near Ariyalur for over an hour. Similarly, the Tiruchi-Cuddalore passenger was detained at Sillakudi for more than an hour. Normal traffic was restored at around 7.10 p.m.
