dated June 12, 1958: Soviet charges

The Soviet Union on June 10 blamed “ruling circles of England and the United States” for current troubles in Lebanon. The Soviet delegate told the Security Council that Lebanon’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Charles Malik, was “speaking with the voice” of these “ruling circles” when he charged the United Arab Republic with intervening in Lebanese internal affairs. He recalled that the Lebanese Government had backed the Eisenhower doctrine “as early as the spring of 1957” though this doctrine had been “rejected by the Arab peoples.”
