This Day That Age
The Union Ministry of Steel, Mines and Fuel has been considering measures to economise consumption of imported petroleum articles, but this need not necessarily lead to petrol rationing, official sources said in New Delhi on June 10. These sources said: “In the context of the present foreign exchange difficulties, the Government’s policy is to restrict imports with a view to conserving foreign exchange. In pursuance of that policy, the Ministry has been considering measures of economising consumption of imported articles, including petroleum. The Government believes that these measures need not necessarily lead to rationing. The possibility of the Government appealing to petroleum consumers to exercise a voluntary cut is not ruled out.” India imports petroleum products every year to the tune of one hundred crores of rupees.
