MAHABUBNAGAR: “Artificial Recharge of Groundwater through Dug wells” a subsidy scheme will be implemented in 43 of 64 mandals in Mahabunagar District, which are identified by the Groundwater Department as semi-critical, critical and over exploited. This was informed in a district level workshop organized by NABARD here on Wednesday. The scheme will be funded through NABARD by the Ministry of Finance Government of India and will be implemented by the State government in association with State Groundwater Department, Central Groundwater Board, Panchayatraj Institutions, NABARD, Banks and NGOs. Farmers who have existing irrigation open wells in the 43 identified mandals will be eligible under the scheme. The eligible farmers should give their willingness to construct approved recharge structures. The subsidy will be routed through banks directly to the bank accounts of farmers after completing the construction of recharge structures. District Collector V. Usharani in her inaugural address said that the scheme is a boon to the drought prone district of Mahabubnagar. The Collector informed that the Agriculture Department will be the Nodal department and departments like DWMA, DRDA, Groundwater will extend full cooperation for the success of the scheme. Deputy Director Groundwater Raghavendra Chary presented the technical details and success stories after implementation of the scheme on pilot basis in Gujarat. Scientist from Central Groundwater board Pandit Madhunure, spoke about the overall situation of Groundwater in the State as well as in the Country. District Officers from various departments, Bank officials and Representatives from NGOs participated in the workshop.
