In progress: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S.Arumugam inspecting the Vellakuttai Channel works in Salem on Wednesday. SALEM: Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam on Wednesday asked the officials of the Salem Corporation to expedite the restoration works of Vellakuttai Channel, which, during rainy days, floods the major residential localities such as Kitchipalayam. DrainageThe Vellakuttai Channel has long been converted into a major drainage channel. The water carrying duct is chocked with plastic waste and other garbage dumped by the residents of the localities. Untreated effluents from near-by dyeing units also flow into the channel. Fertile groundIt has been a fertile ground for breeding mosquitoes. The channel has been carrying the waste through Kitchipalayam, Vidya Nagar, Kunjan Karadu and Sathyamurti Street, all major residential localities. The police have records saying that many had drowned in the channel during heavy rain. Health hazardFor the civic authorities, the channel has been a major source of health hazard and an eyesore. Hence, the Corporation has taken up the works of paving the ground and cementing the banks as part of the second phase of the Tirumanimutharu river project. The works are going on at Vidya Nagar where the Minister conducted inspection. He asked the officials not to delay the work and wanted them to finish it before the rainy season. Corporation Commissioner K. S. Palanisamy and other officials accompanied the Minister.
