Silent Shanghai

The report on how Shanghai remained silent over the weekend because over 100,000 students were sitting at the world’s largest state-organised examinations (June 11) was interesting. It shows how much the Chinese authorities value education and prioritise it above everything else. Can the same thing happen in India? Will there be a ban on work in construction sites and no-horn orders when IIT-JEE, CAT or UPSC examinations take place? We have got so used to the noise around us that we have forgotten that it can be stopped for a cause.

S. Kameshwaran,

Chennai
