News Analysis
* * The last paragraph in an AFP report “‘Bollywood Oscars’ set to hit Bangkok gala” (“Newscape” page, June 7, 2008) was “The event has an environmental theme this year, with a special award presented Friday to honour Nobel Peace Prize winner and climate change scientist Rajendra Pachauri.” We repeat the clarification issued in this column on February 20, 2008 and May 13, 2008: “Merci Olsson, Marketing and Communications Manager, Nobelprize.org, Sweden (the official web site of the Nobel Foundation) clarifies that the recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and not R.K. Pachauri. Mr. Pachauri participated in the award ceremony as a chairman of the IPCC. (The 2007 Peace Nobel was also shared by Albert Arnold (Al) Gore Jr.)” * * A sentence in the last paragraph of an AP report “IOC shortlists four cities” (“Sport”, June 6, 2008) was “The big four — Chicago, Madrid, Spain and Tokyo — had all been virtually assured of advancing to the final stage.” It should have been Rio de Janerio instead of Spain. (The report was on four cities being picked as finalists for the 2016 Olympics.) * * The last paragraph in a PTI report “Prabhjot’s jersey fetches highest price” (“Sport”, June 6, 2008) was “A jersey worn by Deepak Thakur fetched Rs 60,000 from Allahabad-based businessman Bhupinder Singh. Thakur had worn the jersey in the 2004 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan in the Netherlands.” The 2004 final was between Spain and the Netherlands. The third-fourth place playoff was between India and Pakistan. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible.
