Iran firm on nuclear plan

Atul Aneja

DUBAI: Iran has rejected fresh demands by the U.S. and E.U. to rein in its nuclear programme. “With God’s help, today [the Iranian nation], has gained victory and the enemies cannot do a thing,” said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the U.S. and E.U. issued a communiqué warning Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment or face fresh sanctions. The statement was made at the end of U.S. President Bush’s last summit with the E.U. in Slovenia. The E.U.’s External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said the E.U. could freeze Iranian bank assets. The meeting also signalled to Iran that it could avail itself of fresh incentives if it complied with the West’s demands. E.U.’s foreign policy chief Javier Solana is expected to visit Iran this weekend with a new set of proposals.
