GROUNDWORK: Work in progress on the Kandaleru-Poondi canal stretch. CHENNAI: The Chennai city would receive Krishna water from the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh in August, according to the Public Works Department. The State government proposes to seek water release from the Kandaleru reservoir in August. Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday at zero point, the inter-State border of the Kandaleru-Poondi canal near Uthukottai, PWD executive engineer (Krishna Water Supply Project division) R. Emaraj said that measures to seek Krishna water release would be taken after the completion of repair work being executed on the Kandaleru-Poondi canal stretch of 25 km from the zero point to Poondi reservoir. At present, 60 per cent of the improvement work had been completed. He said the Sri Sathya Sai Trust was executing the improvement work in the vulnerable portion between the 13.5-km point and 21.5-km point of the canal covering villages such as Gerugambakkam, Othappai and Mylapore. While the work to construct a retention wall in the damaged portion of the canal would be completed in July, other works such as stone pitching on the slope above the canal would be finished by September, he said. Desilting of the canal bed would be carried out in July.
