BHUBANESWAR: Is the government committed to the cause of Oriya language? The answer seems negative as one observes the affairs of the State-owned two-year-old Oriya Bhasa Pratisthan. The institute that was created amidst much hype on the State’s Foundation Day on April 1, 2006 for promotion of Oriya language and literature runs without a director for the past 16 months. Ironically enough, the Chief Minister happens to be the Chairperson of this prestigious institution. Institute’s first director K.C.Tikayatrai retired on January 31 last year and it took the government seven months to call applications for the post. As per the required eligibility conditions – that the applicant has to be below 61 years old, a doctorate degree holder and researcher in Oriya with at least five years of experience as a reader and some administrative experience – 10 applications were short listed. The list was sent to the department of higher education on September 18 last year with a request to fill the post after due perusal but the matter is still pending, said the sources in the institute.
