Probe ordered into convict’s murder

CUTTACK: Chief Minister Naveen Patanaik on Wednesday ordered an administrative probe into Monday’s attack on a convict in Choudwar jail, who later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday. The State Home Secretary would probe and submit a report in 10 days. Serving a life term, Krushna Chandra Behera was attacked allegedly by a fellow convict Pratap Khatei with a sharp kitchenware. Eye witnesses alleged that Khatei stabbed Behera repeatedly with a broken metal frying stick. Doctors said Behera died as his lungs were severely damaged in the attack.

Meanwhile, the local police on Wednesday visited the jail premises and launched investigation into the matter. A case was filed by the jail authorities with the local police following the death of Behera on Tuesday.

Weapon examined

“The police have examined the weapon used in the attack and visited the scene of crime. Some convicts, who witnessed the attack, have also been questioned,” informed jail Superintendent Dharanidhar Das. Khatei was kept in an isolated cell. “I was repeatedly threatened by someone in the night. I use to hear a loud noise near my cell at midnight and therefore I had kept it with me to attack the one frightening me,” Khatei told the psychiatrist treating him on Wednesday.
