BHUBANESWAR: Director-General of Indian Meteorological Department Ajit Tyagi here on Wednesday said the new Doppler radar at Paradip in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district would be made operational by next monsoon. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Tyagi said the Doppler radar would be installed at four places such as Paradip, Gopalpur, Balasore and Sambalpur. Works were in advanced stage at Paradip and expected to be completed soon, he said. Towards accuracyThe department was also looking to develop a networking system among all the radars to make the forecast accurate and strengthen the early warning system. Similarly, 30 weather automation centres and 60 rain gauge centres would be set up in the State, he said. The department had earmarked Rs. 900 crores during the 11th Five Year Plan to strengthen its infrastructure as well as information dissemination system, Mr. Tyagi said, adding that Rs. 300 would be spent within the first two years. As Orissa was prone to various natural disasters, Rs. 45 crores would be allotted to the State, he said. TV channelEarlier, the official said there was a plan to start a dedicated television channel to provide weather information to people. A consultancy had also been appointed and it was likely to submit its report soon, he said. To begin with, the TV channel would hit the air for a shorter period ranging between 3 hours and 6 hours, Mr. Tyagi said, elaborating that it would be developed on public-private partnership mode.
