Burning anger: KSU activists burning a copy of the Class VII Social Studies textbook in front of the DDE office in Kozhikode on Wednesday in protest against the alleged politicisation of textbooks. Kozhikode: Activists of the district unit of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) took out a march to the office of the Deputy Director of Education here on Wednesday demanding that the government withdraw the controversial contents in the text book of Social Studies for Class VII. They also burnt copies of the text book to mark their protest. The activists said that text books contained portions glorifying the Communist party for implementing the land reforms Act in the State as well as trivialising the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in the struggle for Indian independence. The text books also contained matters adoring and depicting unnecessary local uprisings, they said. They also alleged that the Left Democratic Front government was implementing the hidden agenda drawn up by the Kerala Sashtra Sahitya Parishad and the Kerala State Teachers Association against religions and religious philosophy. KSU district president I.P. Rajesh presided over the meeting. KSU State general secretary M. Danishlal and spokesman P.K. Ragesh spoke. Mr. Rajesh said that the activists would take out a march to all district educational centres on June 18 to protest against the government’s plan to implement a Communist agenda in the educational sector in the State.
