Goods train derails near Manapparai

Sudden turn: Capsized empty oil tank wagons lying near the track near Manapparai on Wednesday.

TIRUCHI: Nine empty oil tank wagons of a goods train derailed between Manapparai and Samuthiram railway stations in the Tiruchi–Dindigul broad gauge section in the jurisdiction of Madurai Railway Division on Wednesday.

The train was on its way to Tiruchi from Dindigul when the accident occurred at around 9.30 a.m. While eight wagons jumped off the track and capsized, one was derailed. On information, a breakdown train carrying men and material was immediately moved from Tiruchi, closer to the accident spot, to clear the line for normal traffic. A breakdown special from Madurai was also moved to the accident spot, sources said.

Top officials from Tiruchi Division headed by Divisional Railway Manager R.C. Jat, Senior Divisional Safety Officer A. Mani, Senior Divisional Engineer (Coordination) P.V. Reddy and senior railway officials from Madurai visited the accident spot to get first hand information about the accident and conducted enquiries. The section was cleared for normal traffic at around 12.15 p.m. As the accident occurred in Madurai railway division, a detailed enquiry would be conducted by the railway authorities of that division, an official here said.
