KAKINADA: The Telugu Desam Party polit bureau has decided to intensify its struggle against price rise, belt shops and Special Economic Zones.

Briefing reporters after a meeting of the party’s polit bureau at Timmapuram near here on Wednesday, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu told reporters that an agitation on price rise would be organised from June 15 to 30 in all mandal headquarters.

Another agitation would be against the allotment of vast tracts of land for SEZs.

Mr. Naidu thanked the CPI (M) for the cooperation it extended in the recent byelections but remained non-committal on forging alliance with it in the 2009 Assembly elections.

No truck with TRS

Dismissing reports about the possible alliance of his party with the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Mr. Naidu said its respect for the Telangana sentiment should not be construed as a tilt towards the TRS.

He said the party was discussing the sensitive issue and would take an appropriate decision.

It had already left the matter to a five-member committee to recommend the future course of action after deliberations on June 18.

‘Not against it’

Mr. Naidu reiterated that though the Telugu Desam Party was not against formation of Telangana, it would not take a hasty decision on the issue. The Telugu Desam Party chief observed that some Congress leaders were sending signals that their party was in favour of an undivided State in contrast to the party’s willingness to abide by the decision of the second States’ Reorganisation Commission.

This was evidence enough to show that the Congress was not serious about Telangana. On the other hand, the Congress’ former ally, the TRS, had lost its credibility in the recent byelections due to overconfidence and petty politics.

‘People convinced’

The TRS’ alliance with the Congress in the 2004 elections was clearly intended to garner votes and people were now convinced that it no longer deserved their sympathy.

Asked for the polit bureau’s reaction to the statements of senior leader T. Devender Goud and party MLA T. Srinivas Yadav on Telangana, Mr. Naidu replied that the leaders were asked to restrain themselves from expressing their views to the media before the party took a balanced view of the contentious issue.

The party would take the opinions of all leaders before arriving at a conclusion, he added.

TDP polit bureau members Devender Goud, Erraballi Dayakar Rao, K. Yerran Naidu, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and others were also present.
