Schools reopen to sweeping changes

Multiple schools functioning from the same premises to go; CBSE syllabus to be introduced

Only primary, high schools will function in city

English medium sections being introduced

Hyderabad: Students are in for a lot of changes and confusion when schools reopen after the summer vacation on Thursday.

They will be surprised to find the multiple schools functioning from the same premises gone. Also doing the vanishing act will be the 90 upper primary schools.

As part of the administrative reforms, the district administration has effected sweeping changes, fuelling fears of closure of schools. The move has drawn flak from parents and some teachers’ unions.

Beginning tomorrow there will be only primary and high schools in Hyderabad district. Classes VI and VII from the 84 upper primary schools located within a distance of 2 km are being shifted to 135 identified “SUCCESS” high schools. The posts along with the teachers handling 6th and 7th classes are also being shifted. There will also be ‘academic clubbing’ of classes of 156 primary schools located on the same premises or nearby with a view to impart quality education in government schools.

“There will be no closure of schools. After clubbing of classes there will be one teacher for one class as against one for two or three classes. In fact new schools will be opened at 10 places this year,” said Hyderabad Collector Navin Mittal. He further clarified that the primary sections (classes I to V) in all the shifted upper primary schools will continue to function in the same school as primary schools.

Also, parallel English medium sections are being introduced in 135 high schools in the twin cities as part of the SUCCESS (Strengthening and Universalisation of Quality and Access to Secondary Schools) project. CBSE syllabus will be imparted in these schools at no cost. The SUCCESS project is intended to improve the educational and employment opportunities of students in government schools. During summer vacation training has been imparted to 1,300 teachers who will be handling the English medium sections. “Admissions will commence tomorrow and parents’ option will be taken for admitting their children,” said B. Mallamma, District Educational Officer.
