Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation will make workers, employed on daily wages since 1993, permanent with effect from April 21, 2008.

The decision follows talks, which were held between the local body administration and the Chennai Corporation AITUC Coalition, according to a release from the labour union.

The State government had issued an order that workers employed on daily wages be made permanent with effect from this date.

The union held talks with Mayor M.Subramanian and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni on Tuesday.

Following the talks, the Mayor and the Commissioner promised to make such workers permanent.

They have also assured that outstanding amounts due to former workers who have died would be distributed, the release added.
