DHAKA: The former Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, was freed from detention by the caretaker government on Wednesday. She would be on parole for eight weeks.

After 11 months in jail after being arrested on corruption charges, the ailing leader of the Awami League (AL) was driven to her husband’s residence from the sub-jail in the Parliament complex. Ms. Hasina first went to the memorial where her father and Bangladesh’s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was assassinated in 1975. She denied that her release was conditional. She later presided over a party working committee meeting at her residence.

Analysts said the sudden release — even if it is temporary — was the outcome of her party’s stand that it would not join the ongoing government-sponsored dialogue or participate in the coming election unless Ms. Hasina was released. Analysts foresaw more such developments.

Earlier, an executive order was issued to release Ms. Hasina on parole for eight weeks so that she can go abroad for medical treatment.

The duration of Ms. Hasina’s freedom depends on how the military-backed government manages the crucial pre-election stage. Ms. Hasina was arrested on July 16, 2007, in connection with an extortion case filed by a businessman.

Her aides said she may leave for the U.S. on Thursday for medical treatment. Ms. Hasina’s ears and eyes were affected after an attempt on her life in 2004.
