A brand new course in retail


The University School of Management Studies, the on-campus B-school of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi, has entered into a collaboration with NIS Academy to offer a certificate course in retail. A MoU was signed by USMS Dean R. K. Mittal and Manoj Chawla, Senior Vice-President and Head of Employability Solutions Group, NIS Sparta, in the presence of I. P. University Vice-Chancellor K. K. Aggarwal. The three-month course will provide a blend of soft and domain skills through classroom learning as well as project work. Offered on a weekend mode, the course will impart training in Retail Selling Skills, Customer Service, Soft Skills, Basics of Retailing and Retail Store Standard Operating Procedures. “The objective is to create a cadre of ‘floor ready’ manpower, especially for lifestyle retail, and enable the retail organisations to attract efficient, effective and productive human talent leading to savings on training costs,” said a University spokesperson. Speaking about the MoU, Prof. Aggarwal explained: “Industry-academia partnerships in creating certified manpower will contribute towards fulfilling the growing demand for manpower in the sector.” There are 50 seats available under this course, the first batch for which will begin on July 26. The minimum eligibility criterion for the programme is graduation in any discipline. A merit list for admission will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination. Candidates can obtain the application form from USMS or download it from www.ipu.ac.in .

Zuber Ahmad, a faculty member in the Department of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Aligarh Muslim University, has been honoured with the prestigious fellowship of American College of Chest Physicians, US. The fellowship is given to physicians for their outstanding contribution in the field of respiratory medicine. Dr. Ahmad will be accorded this honour during the Chest Conference-2008 to be held in Philadelphia in October this y ear. He will also present his research work on the treatment of bronchial asthma. Dr. Ahmad has published about 75 research papers in various journals.

Satyam Fashion Institute, Noida, affiliated to SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, will initiate a one-year diploma programme in fashion design from this session. Candidates ought to have cleared Class XII or equivalent from any recognised Board. The procedure of admission is based on first-come-first-serve basis. Genpact, which manages business processes for companies around the world, and NIIT have announced the launch of a joint venture -- NIIT Institute of Process Excellence Ltd. -- to address the increasing demand for skilled workers in the business and technology services industry by providing training programmes in relevant areas. The company will initially offer training programmes in business processes, language skills and business communication, and intends to add offering s in other areas including finance and accounting, banking, insurance and supply chain. “Genpact and NIIT will combine their respective strengths to offer a comprehensive training curriculum for existing and potential employees of business services and technology companies. Genpact will provide industry-specific knowledge as well as internship and job opportunities. NIIT will complement this with its expertise in learning content development, training delivery and its capabilities in education process management,” said a release.
