dated June 13, 1958: U.N. observers

The Security Council on June 11 decided to send a team of United Nations observers to Lebanon to prevent infiltration and arms smuggling into that troubled State. The Soviet Union alone abstained in the vote on a Swedish resolution introduced last night after the Council had heard detailed charges by Lebanon’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Charles Malik, of “massive intervention” by the United Arab Republic. The other 10 members voted in favour of the resolution. Following the adoption of the Swedish resolution, the U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, announced that the first group of observers recruited from among U.N. personnel in Jerusalem, would arrive in Lebanon on June 12. The group will have instructions to “keep the Security Council informed through the Secretary-General.”
